The whole debate is a Victorian aristocratic conceit based on nothing but snobbery. It began over 100 years ago when the upper classes simply refused to believe that a person not educated at university could actually be talented.

I thought the character played by Rhys Ifans was well done.

excellent with flaws. Some of the male characters weren't aged. I had to go back and readjust the time line from end of Elizabeth's reign to 40 years earlier. Vanessa's older Elizabeth was the way I could tell which decade the plot was in.
